5G and Your Health

5G and Your Health
Digital Insights Podcast🎙️16

Ever since #5G started rolling out back in 2018, there’s been rumors and conspiracy theories regarding the effects on the health of humans and animals. The Internet showed us pictures of birds falling out of the sky and people burned down cell towers. The non-ionizing radiation emitted as cell tower interacts with your smartphone falls on the lowest end of the electromagnetic spectrum and the transmission levels haven’t changed over all the decades we’ve enjoyed cellular telephony. We’re talking “baby monitor” power levels.

Despite being the hottest thing around, #5G costs a lot of money to roll out. Just ask all the mobile operators who are spending tens of billions of dollars to buy spectrum to accommodate this latest “G.” Subscribers with their new 5G smartphones in hand have already made it clear that they won’t pay extra for faster speeds. This leaves carriers scrambling to find other ways to monetize their new networks.

Just when you thought you had “Edge Computing” figured out, here comes #5G MEC. What in the heck is MEC? The acronym stands for mobile #edge computing. Lately, it’s also been multichannel edge computing and even multi-access edge computing. The takeaway is that mobile operators are putting edge compute capabilities at the edge of the cellular network like at the cell tower or within their various metro data centers. This results in lower latency for compute workloads and it frees-up network bandwidth that would otherwise be clogged with requests for cloud resources.

Dr. Gavin Wood coined the term, #Web3 back in 2014 because he thought the current Web and Internet was fundamentally broken and he wanted fix it with blockchain technologies like Ethereum. Control over identity, financial transactions, and personal data had become centralized and dominated by a handful of powerful web platforms. You can think of web3 as a “Power to the People” movement.

The introduction of #5G brings faster speeds, significantly more capacity, mobile edge computing, and lower latency to the world of smartphones and cellular IoT devices. The use of different wireless frequencies delivers varying range and speed while increased bandwidth supports of to one million concurrently connected devices in a square kilometer around a cell tower.
